Walter

Tobias

Obituary

Walter Tobias, 87, a long-time resident of his beloved Simsbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, August 13, 2021. He was the only child of the late Hugo and Irma (Gartner) Tobias. He is survived by his loving spouse, Evelyn (Parker) and his children, Steve and his wife Robin of Stafford Springs, Karen Stanford and her husband Ted of Farmington; six grandchildren: Jesse (Nicolle), Lindsay, Ashley (Ken), Jared (Sarah), Michael (Melissa Anne), Zachary, and two great-grandchildren: Evie and Nina Sadly, he lost his youngest son Robert S. Tobias in 2019. Born in Cologne, Germany, Walter came into the world living under the dangerous regime of Nazi Germany. As Hitler rose to power, the family fled the country, and like millions of others, immigrated to America, arriving at Ellis Island on December 11, 1937, when he was only four years old. Walter was raised in Hartford, attended local schools, was a graduate of Weaver High School (Class of 1941), and later graduated from the State Technical Institute in Hartford. While attending Weaver, he met the love of his life, Evelyn Schupack (Bulkeley High School, Class of 1953) and they married on July 17, 1954. Walter was 20 years old and Evelyn was 18 on their wedding day. Together they raised three children. Unfortunately, he lost his beloved “Evie” in 2012 after 58 years of marriage. In April of 2019, Walter married his newly found love, Evelyn Anne Parker. They exchanged vows at their residence at Brookdale Gables in Farmington. Walter proudly served his country in the United States Army for four years and was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. After his honorable discharge, he worked as a design engineer for Emhart. Walter was an avid golfer and an active member of the Geritol Swingers Club at Simsbury Farms and Theatre Guild of Simsbury. He was also a longtime member of the congregation at Tikvoh Chadoshoh in Bloomfield, as well as the Knights of Pythias, Jewish War Veterans, and American Legion. His legacy lives on in all of us. Say not in grief “HE IS NO MORE” but in thankfulness “THAT HE WAS” Hebrew Proverb The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 11 a.m. at The Hartford Mutual Cemetery located on 74 Wolcott Rd Simsbury.
