Walter J. Vogel, 82, of Chatfield Dr., West Hartford, husband of the late Naomi (Gaberman) Vogel, died at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center on Thursday, October 5, 2006. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Jacob S. and Nina (Walter) Vogel. He attended Noah Webster School in Hartford, and graduated from Hall High School, West Hartford, and from the University of Connecticut. A US Army Veteran of World War II, Walter sold life insurance for Mutual Benefit, Continental American and CIGNA. After his retirement, despite his struggle with deafness, he served as a volunteer at Hartford Hospital. He was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, West Hartford, as well as the West Hartford Regents. A former member of Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield, he was an avid golfer and winner of the club’s Senior Championship. Possessed of a sharp sense of humor, Walter was a member of the Hartford Bridge Club, a lover of the sea and a fisherman. He leaves a son, Lawrence A. Vogel and his wife Carol Freedman of West Hartford; a daughter, Lisa E. Vogel and her husband, Billy Aronson of Brooklyn, NY; four grandchildren: Max Vogel-Freedman, Gabriella Vogel-Freedman, Jake Aronson and Anna Aronson; and a sister: Lucille Barwell of Bloomfield, sister-in-law Jean Vogel of West Hartford and sister-in-law Edith “Gay” Sudarsky and her husband Joseph Sudarsky of Bloomfield. He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley W. Vogel and sister, Esther “Babe” Oelbaum. The family expresses its deep appreciation to his long term care givers, Yvonne Smith and Joyce Carroll, for their compassion. Funeral services will be held TODAY, Friday, October 6, 2006 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Stephen Fuchs officiating. Interment will follow in the Beth Israel Cemetery, Avon. A memorial period will be observed at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, 33 Newport Ave., West Hartford on Friday, following the funeral.
