“Don’t worry, everything will work out”, words frequently uttered by Albert “Al” Spaien, a wise, kind man, phenomenal father and husband. Al, 91, died on Sunday April 14, 2019, his daughters, Eve Kennedy-Spaien and Gail Spaien at his bedside. Al touched thousands in his lifetime. Born in Hartford, the son of the late Hyman and Tillie (Rosen) Spaien. He graduated from UCONN, was a Sergeant in the Korean war, and the owner of the family business, Spaien’s Department Store. He met the love of his life, Fritzie (Winick) Spaien and enjoyed 54 years of marriage. Al was a devout Jew, volunteering at Beth EL Temple in West Hartford, CT and later at Temple Israel in Portsmouth, NH. He leaves two daughters, Gail Ellen Spaien and her husband, Rick Bertaska of South Portland, ME and Eve Tracey Kennedy-Spaien and her husband, Kevin Kennedy-Spaien of Danvers, MA; and two beloved grandchildren, Amelia Bertaska and Evan Kennedy-Spaien. He was predeceased by his sister, Martha (Spaien) Dwartz. Funeral services will be held graveside on Tuesday, April 16, at 11 a.m. at the Hartford Sick Benefit Association Cemetery, 999 Garden Street. Following the service we will raise a toast to Al (details to be provided). Shiva will be observed at the home of the Kennedy-Spaien’s through Thursday evening, April 18th. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Israel , 200 State Street, Portsmouth NH, or Beth El Temple 2626 Albany Ave, West Hartford, CT. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
