Alvin I Friedman

d. March 10, 2021

Alvin I Friedman passed away peacefully on March 10, 2021. Al was born and raised in Hartford, CT. For over 60 years, he was a West Hartford resident and loved his community, where he raised his family and grew his business. He was the beloved husband of the late Beth (Golemba) Friedman. Al adored his beautiful, kind and funny wife for over 50 years of marriage. Born in Hartford on January 12, 1928, he was the son of Barney and Anna (Wallad) Friedman. Al graduated Weaver High School and University of Connecticut. He was a WWII army veteran and was honored with the WW II Victory Medal. Al was the owner of Harmac, a men’s clothing store at Bishops Corner in West Hartford for 35 Years. His customers quickly became some of his closest friends, striking up many enjoyable conversations. Al was like the mayor of West Hartford, practically knowing everyone in town, fitting customers from their childhood to proms to weddings. Everyone loved getting to know sweet Al. After retiring in 1991, Al enjoyed travelling with his loving wife Beth, spending time with Beth’s sister and husband, Joan and Bill Reider in Florida, playing golf with his buddies at Cliffside Golf Club and especially loved spending time visiting his two daughters, their husbands and four cherished grandchildren. He was also an avid UCONN basketball fan and spent many hours with Beth cheering on their Huskies. Al enjoyed his daily mall walks where he met many nice friends to share a coffee and walk together. Al was also an active member of the Regents Club, a local mens group that offered monthly speakers and socialization for retired professionals. He will be missed tremendously by all who knew him. Al’s life was his family and he was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. He is survived by his daughters Amy Amaru of Bethel, CT, Tina Torman and her husband Hal of Reading, MA, dearest sister-in-law Claire Friedman of West Hartford, four cherished grandchildren; Emily Torman and Jennifer Torman of Philadelphia, PA, Alex Amaru of Newtown, CT and Alana Amaru of Bethel, CT., and loving nieces and nephews Andrea, Bruce, Susan, Richard, Kenneth, Lynda and their spouses and children who he adored and were such an important part of his life.

Al was predeceased by his dearest wife Beth Friedman, beloved son-in-law Joseph Amaru, brother Max Friedman, sister Pearl Gellin and her husband Samuel, sister Roz Fishberg and sister and brother in law, Joan and Bill Reider. The family expresses a heartfelt appreciation for the loving, compassionate and superb care provided by Al’s caregiver, Danuta, and all the wonderful staff at Brookdale Chatfield in West Hartford.
