Bertram Lawrence Mayerson died on Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at the age of 92 2/3 at Salmon Brook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Glastonbury, CT after a long illness. Bert was born in Mineola, New York and was a long-time resident of East Hartford. He worked for many years as an instrumental music teacher in the East Hartford public school system. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. After his retirement from teaching, he enjoyed traveling, dining out, and playing his string bass with local musicians and musical groups. He was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Rachel Mayerson, and his wife, Dorothy Gillette Mayerson. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Barrett Costa Mayerson of East Hartford, his son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Elizabeth Mayerson of Bolton, CT, his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Kathryn Mayerson of Lewiston, Maine, and his grandson and his grandson’s finance, Kent Mayerson and Alexandra Mekus. In addition, he is survived by his wife’s daughter and her family, Deborah Costa and her husband Michael Griffaton and their sons Daniel and David Griffaton of Pickerington, Ohio. He also leaves behind many cousins, especially Judy Katzman of Bloomfield, CT and her family, many friends, and countless former students. The family would like to thank the staff at Salmon Brook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, especially Gail, Kingsley, and Zelma, the hospice nurses of Masonicare, as well as long-time home health aide Tracy Bassett.
A memorial event will be planned at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations made be made to the East Hartford Summer Youth Festival or charity of the donor’s choice.
