Charles Nightingale

Charles Nightingale, Glastonbury CT passed away at home on December 18, 2017 after a 10 year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). Born in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Michael and Annamarie (Schmidt) Nightingale.

Dr. Nightingale attended Fordham University (BS), St Johns University (MS), and University of Buffalo (PhD). He joined the ROTC while at Fordham and attained the rank of Captain during his Army service.

His career as a professor at the University of Buffalo and concluding it as the Vice President of Research at Hartford Hospital, where he worked from 1978 until retirement in 2004.

World renowned for his pharmaceutical research, specializing in anti-invectives, antibiotics, antimicrobial therapy and pharmacodynamics; his passion for teaching and research continued with the fellowship programs he mentored at Hartford Hospital & his work as adjunct professor at UConn.

He established a global exchange program in the 1980’s between Hartford Hospital and various teaching hospitals and Universities in China. Initially exclusive to pharmaceutical research it later expanded to include nursing, cardiology, dentistry, and other medical specialties. This program continues to thrive today.

Co-author of five advanced subject matter text books, numerous articles and research papers, these works are still highly regarded in the global medical and science communities.

In his personal life he devoted time to family & friends and travel, enjoyed theater, playing piano, fly fishing, skiing, hiking, spending time with his grandchildren and catching up with friends and family.

Dr. Nightingale leaves behind his high school sweetheart & loving wife of 56 years Loretta, children Harris, Bonnie and Richard, his brother Joseph; their families, children and grandchildren

Services: 1pm on Wednesday, December 20th Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT. Interment at New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn, Long Island, NY.
