David S Fishman

d. January 31, 2021

David S. Fishman passed away with his family gathered on January 31, 2021 at the age of 87 of Parkinson’s-related complications, a disease he quietly and resolutely fought for more than 25 years. He was born to Harold and Tessie (Walder) Fishman on March 1, 1933, in Providence, RI. David was chosen to attend the elite Classical High School, where he played baseball and ran track. During his senior year he contracted polio, and lied about the severity of his symptoms in order to avoid being placed in an iron lung. After high school graduation he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged and enrolled at Brown University, where he earned a bachelor of Science in Engineering. After graduating in 1956, he married Linda Kessler and they settled in the Hartford, CT, area where they lived most of their lives. In Hartford, David first worked for Pratt and Whitney and simultaneously attended law school at nights preparing to become a Patent Attorney. Through hard work and sheer intellect, he graduated first in his class from UConn School of Law. David and Linda were world travelers and lovers of opera. His Bouillabaisse was celebrated around the world. David loved his family and the R.I. shore, where they had a beach home for 35 years and where he looked forward to spending most of the summer. He leaves his wife of 64 years, Linda K. Fishman (Brown ’56), his son Douglas Fishman and his wife Dena Rosenbloom, daughter Sarah Boyle and her husband Raul Cooke, grandchildren Zoe Fishman, Lili Fishman, Mathias Boyle, Casey Boyle, and step grandchildren Lia Rosenbloom and Aaron Rosenbloom-Snow. He also leaves his brother Charles (Chuck) and wife Margaret Fishman, and sisters Bernice Simons, Laura Landes and husband Jerald, and Susan Anderson, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Due to COVID, a private graveside service for family members will be held on February 3. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association (apdaparkinson.org), American Heart Association (heart.org), or Brown University (alumni-friends.brown.edu/giving).
