Doris Cantor

Doris Cantor, businesswoman, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully at her home in Hollywood, Florida on January 17. She was 88. Born Doris Meadow December 16, 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Sarah (Schulman) and David Meadow, immigrants from Eastern Europe, who owned and operated a dry goods store in the Williamsburg neighborhood. She attended New York City public schools and graduated from New York University with a degree in business in 1945. She was working in a New York City import-export business when she met Bernard Cantor, whom she married in 1947. Together they owned and operated an egg farm in Putnam, Conn., for twenty-seven years, before moving to Florida. She was a longtime president of the Sisterhood of Temple Beth Israel of Danielson, Conn. A voracious reader, throughout her life she had a great interest in politics, business, and investing. Her husband Bernard died in 2002. She is survived by three daughters, Florence Nixon, of Plainville, Conn., Esta Farkas, of Longmeadow, Mass., and Susan Rappaport, of Weston, Fla.; a son, Alan Cantor, of Concord, N.H.; six grandchildren, Melanie and Joshua Farkas, Scott Nixon, Jessica Rappaport, and Rebecca and Max Cantor; and one great-grandson, Eli Nixon. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Debra Cantor officiating, followed by burial at the Congregation Knesseth Israel Cemetery in Ellington, Conn.
