Doris (Bogatz) Cohen

d. January 1, 1970

Doris Bogatz Cohen, beloved mother, sister, aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2016 at McLean Rehabilitation Center. She was 96 years old. She was predeceased by her son Robert and husband Sidney, by her brothers Jack Bogatz, Philip Bogatz, and Norman Bogatz, and by her sister, Ruth Bogatz Bisberg.
Born in Manchester, Connecticut, to Hyman and Molly Bogatz, the family moved to Meriden when she was two years old. A graduate of Meriden High School, she married Sidney Cohen and moved to Simsbury in 1953, establishing Dorsid”s, a men’s haberdashery and family shoe store, which was in business until 1980.
As founding members, Sid and Doris were instrumental in the establishment and development of the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation. She was a long-time member of The FVJC Sisterhood, Hadassah, and in her later years, she worked on the synagogue archival project. She was also a member of the Auxiliary of the Hebrew Home Hospital and the Jewish Children’s Social Organization. In addition, she was a life member of the McLean Home Auxiliary, and volunteered at the McLean Home Gift Shop from 1971 until she could no longer continue.
While the local community regarded her as a sharp, stylish businesswoman, and a pillar of the close-knit Jewish community in Simsbury and the Farmington Valley, to her nieces and nephews she was the hub of her extended family, the central link, always welcoming, interested, easily relatable, and totally engaging. For as long as she could travel, she was present at every occasion, holiday celebration and milestone.
Smart, insightful, optimistic, and always the essence of dignity, she was the ultimate role model for nieces, nephews and friends. She will be sorely missed by all.
Services will be graveside at the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation Memorial Park, Mountainview Avenue, Avon, CT on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 11am. In lieu of flowers and in her memory, donations can be made to Jewish Family Service of Greater Hartford , or to the Robert Cohen Memorial Scholarship of the McLean Scholarship Fund, c/o Kate Kerchaert, US Trust, 99 Founders Plaza 5th Fl., East Hartford, CT 06108.
