Dorothy Posner Sussman, 98, passed peacefully in Boca Raton, Florida surrounded by family on October 12, 2021. She was a born in Hartford, CT to Samuel and Fanny Posner and was a longtime resident of New Britain, CT. She was the beloved wife of her late husband, Harold M. Sussman who owned Sussman Giant Food with his brothers, the late Bernie and Paul Sussman. She leaves her sisters-in-law Beatrice Sussman of Delray Beach, FL and Edythe Sussman of Farmington, CT. Sussman’s Grocery Store was started in the early 20th century by her in-laws, Julius and Lena Sussman as a little market on Broad Street in New Britain, CT. Their sons took it to the next level. Harold, Paul, Bernie and their wives Dorothy, Edie, and Beatrice who were in the middle of it all, grew the little store (living together with lots of children in a small but lively and loving set of apartments above the store) into a chain of supermarkets that was a centerpiece of the New Britain and Central Connecticut business community. “Dottie” had a lifelong thirst for knowledge and often took courses at Lynn and Florida Atlantic Universities. She enjoyed nothing better than a spirited, well-informed debate with her friends and family. She was a staunch supporter of the State of Israel but was empathetic to the delicate political balance there. A lifelong member of Hadassah and significant supporter of the Hartford Jewish Federation she also was not to be trifled with at the Canasta and Mah Jongg tables. Dorothy was a kind and loving soul who loved the company of her family. She leaves her daughter, Bonnie Roth and son-in-law Gerald Roth of Moraga, CA and son Andrew Sussman of Amherst, MA. She was known affectionately as Bubbie or Grandma to her six grandchildren and one great grandson. She leaves her grandchildren Shira Steinbeck and her husband Michael Steinbeck of Walnut Creek, CA, Damien Roth and his wife, Jessica Roth of Brussels, Belgium, Max Sussman and his wife, Sarah Sussman of Laconia, NH, Samuel Sussman of Boston, MA, Michael Sussman of Northampton, MA and Gabriel Sussman, of Northampton, MA. She had one great grandchild – Jack Henry Steinbeck of Walnut Creek, CA. Dorothy was fondly known as Bubbie by her grandchildren and great grandson. She also leaves nieces and nephews and their spouses; Elan Adler Johnson and Bill Johnson of Highland Park, IL, Marc Sussman of Simsbury, CT, Laurie and Richard Brownstein of Newton, MA, Rob and Jeannie Adler of Watertown, MA, Don and Rebecca Yoder Adler of Leonardo, NJ, Bruce and Lisa Sussman of Farmington, CT, Debra Loitz of New Britain, CT and Cheri Sussman of Southington, CT, Dorothy always lovingly remembered her late niece, Roslyn Lee Sussman.
