Dr. Erwin Appell

Dr. Erwin Appell, 86, of Eddy Glover Blvd., New Britain, husband of Janet (Busker) Appell, died Friday, May 19, 2006. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Morris and Molly (Cooper) Appell. He attended the University of Connecticut where he received two Trustee Scholarships. In his sophomore year, he was appointed student conductor of the UConn Marching Band and also of the ROTC Military Band. In his junior year, he was awarded a medal for being the outstanding junior musician. He also wrote a column for the campus newspaper. He served as a student assistant in the foreign language department. He was also a proctor in the men’s dormitory. After completing his BA degree, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was an instructor for a number of radio gunners who served as crew members on B-24 Bombers. Following World War II, he attended Columbia University on the GI Bill and was awarded a Masters Degree. Later he received his Ph.D. from UConn. Soon after, Dr. Appell became one of the founders of Greater Hartford Community College where he was employed as the first full time professor and soon thereafter became chairperson of the History Dept. During the preceding years, Dr. Appell was a teacher at East Hartford High School, and at Conard High School, West Hartford. He was also an adjunct professor at Central Connecticut State University where he taught courses in American History and American Diplomacy. He was also a member of the Board of Education of Temple B’nai Israel in New Britain. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons: Michael Appell of Newton, MA, and Gary Appell of Mill Valley, CA, as well as four grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2006 at 10:30 AM in the Beth Alom Cemetery, Allen St., New Britain with Rabbi Marshal Press officiating. A memorial period will be observed Sunday following the funeral and Monday at his home, 78 Eddy Glover Blvd., New Britain.
