With deep sadness we mourn the death of Robert Flescher, M.D., beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Dr. Flescher was born on April 3, 1937, in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late A. Harry Flescher and Esther Bilinsky Flescher. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School (’53), Columbia College (’57) and Harvard Medical School (’61). He completed training in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and University Hospitals in Cleveland, followed by training in gastroenterology at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. He also served in the U.S. Public Health Service as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1969, he moved to Connecticut with his family. In Hartford, he began his career as an internal medicine physician and gastroenterologist. His solo private practice (1969-1979) grew into Hartford Gastroenterology and Medical Associates (1979-1995), and then became one of the founding practices of Connecticut Gastroenterology and Medical Associates, which later became Connecticut GI. During his career, Dr. Flescher also served continuously on the medical staff at Hartford Hospital including service as Chief of Gastroenterology. He also served as president of the GI section of the Hartford County Medical Association in 1982. From 2008 to 2015 he was a mentor for GI fellows at Hartford Hospital and a volunteer physician at the Malta House of Care. Dr. Flescher was a member of the Emanuel Synagogue, West Hartford, CT.
Dr. Flescher will be remembered not only as a caring physician but also as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joyce Weinberger Flescher, his son Dr. Andrew Michael Flescher, his daughter Dr. Ellen Flescher Foxman, his son-in-law Dr. Ethan Bradley Foxman, his sister Dr. Sharon Flescher, his sister-in-law Marion Flescher, and his grandchildren Benjamin Theodore Foxman, Samuel Holland Foxman, and Rachel Dalia Foxman. He was predeceased by his brother, David Flescher.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Thursday May 5, 2016 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT with Rabbi David J. Small officiating. Interment will follow at the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, CT.
