Dr. Saul (M.) Halem

Dr. Saul Murray Halem, husband to the late Sylvia Halem, passed away on Monday, September 28, 2015. He was born in New York, New York on March 27, 1920, the son of the late Jacob and Bertha Halem. In 1941 he married his one and only love, Sylvia. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Medical Core. In 1945 he was deployed to the Manhattan Project as Chief Medical Surgeon for military personnel and their families stationed at the post, including Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer. In 1946 he was honorably discharged from the Army to join his wife and baby boy. Two years following his discharge, Dr. and Mrs. Halem were blessed with a second son. Saul was a natural at acting and singing and was also an artist. He acted and sang on the Yiddish Stage, his most memorable role being that of Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. He was an avid Civil War buff, a founding member of the Ellington Ridge Country Club and was a former member of Congregation Beth Israel of West Hartford, CT. He leaves his two sons, Stephan Halem and his wife, Arlene, and Ronald Halem and his wife, Rosanna, and four beloved grand daughters. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the Executive Director, Dining Room Manager, staff and residents at the Brookdale/Chatfield senior residence where he lived, for their expressions of love for Saul that they shared and for making his many years of residency there a happy home. In addition, the Halem family would like to thank both family and friends for their continued support and prayers during this time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans of Foreign Wars or the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. Funeral services will be held on October 8, 2015 at 10:00am in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT with internment at the Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, CT.
