E. Michael Ellovich

d. April 1, 2022

E.Michael Ellovich, 90, of Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2022, at Hartford Hospital, surrounded by his entire family. Mike was born on March 9, 1932, in Hartford, CT to the late Myer (Lux) and Rose (White) Ellovich; and was the beloved husband for over 65 years to Lois (Perlysky) Ellovich, whom he met on a blind date set up by their respective fathers and were engaged six weeks later. Mike attended The Loomis School, Dartmouth College, and the former Hillyar College (Univ. of Hartford) where he received his M.Ed . Additionally, Mike spent three years in the United States Marine Corps that last of which was spent playing for the All-Marine Division basketball team in Japan. Later in life, while continuing to work full-time, he attained his Doctorate in Psychology (Psy.D). Mike was the quintessential psychologist who started his career at The Institute of Living; went on to hold years-long school psychologist positions at the Rectory School (Pomfret, CT), Forman School (Litchfield, CT), Oxford Academy (Westbrook, CT) and the Marvelwood School (Kent, CT), traveling great distance each day from his home in West Hartford, and providing expert advice and counsel in his inimitable way to students for over 50 years. He maintained a private practice through an office originally in his home and later in Bloomfield where he met and helped thousands of children and adults with his easy going, insightful manner over his decades-long career. When introduced to anyone as Dr. Ellovich, he always corrected them and said, “call me Mike”. Mike was a 3-sport captain at Loomis (soccer, basketball & baseball); played basketball at Dartmouth; and was an avid life-long golfer and former member of Tumble Brook Country Club and the Rockledge Men’s Club. For much of his golfing life, Mike held a single-digit handicap due mainly to the fact, as he used to say, “I putt pretty well”. He will be missed by so many close friends he met and maintained on the golf course; relationships he treasured and nurtured with his easy-going way, wit, and humor. A voracious reader, Mike was known to have 2-3 books going at any one time and loved discussing and debating those various subjects with friends and family. At night and on weekends, he enjoyed nothing more than watching (with Lois) his beloved New York Yankees and wanted nothing more than to be with his grandchildren. He attended countless dance and piano recitals; hundreds of soccer, basketball, and baseball games; special breakfasts; and, as their biggest fan, held a very special relationship with each one of them. Mike is survived by his wife Lois; his children David (Lisa) Ellovich and Karen (Gordon) Binkhorst, both of West Hartford; and the absolute light of his life grandchildren, Jenna Binkhorst (Laurent Officer); Sara Binkhorst (Elena Bowman); Joshua and Melanie Binkhorst; and Benjamin and Zachary Ellovich. A memorial service is being planned for Tuesday, April 5th (TODAY) at 11:30am at the Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Ave., West Hartford with a luncheon reception immediately following the burial, back at Beth Israel. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the E. Michael and Lois P. Ellovich Family Fund at the Hartford Jewish Federation; the Rectory School, 528 Pomfret Street, Pomfret, CT 06258; or to the donor’s choice.
