Ellen Mae (Kaplan) Cook died peacefully on March 26 after living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years. She was born in 1940 in Brooklyn. She raised two children in New Jersey then eventually retired to Florida. Ellen worked as an administrative assistant but her most fulfilling career was being a grandma. When her grandchildren were little, she would come visit and tell stories from when she was young. Her most famous childhood story took place during World War II in the lobby of the apartment building where she played alone every afternoon. She kept busy going through the mail that arrived from soldiers fighting all over the world. She collected the pretty stamps, then she would toss the letters down the incinerator. She remembered getting into big trouble from her neighbors.
Ellen loved her friends, reading, people-watching and was a champion speller. She leaves her brother Arthur and sister-in-law Lynn, daughter Susan and son-in-law Michael, daughter Lynn and son-in-law George, granddaughter Claire and son-in-law Christopher, granddaughter Lily and son-in-law Ben, and two adorable great-grandchildren Lyra and Ezra. She also leaves behind her beloved dog, Gigi. We are grateful for the care Ellen received at Salmon Brook Rehabilitation and Nursing Center and Accentcare.
