Esther (Bennett) Brandwein

BRANDWEIN, Esther Rachel (Bennett) Esther Rachel (Bennett) Brandwein, 91, died peacefully on Friday, (September 7, 2007) (24 Elul 5767). She was born and raised in Greenwich, the middle of the five children of Meyer Mordechai and Rebecca (Lipsky) Bennett. She graduated as valedictorian of Greenwich High School and worked in her family’s grocery store on Steamboat Road in Greenwich and later as office manager of Hoffman Fuel in Stamford. She married Herbert Brandwein in 1947 and they lived in Mt. Vernon, NY, and Norwalk, Manchester and West Hartford. She and Herb were members of Congregation Zera Kodesh and Beth Israel Synagogue in Norwalk, Temple Beth Shalom in Manchester and Beth David Synagogue in West Hartford. She was very active in Sisterhood and Hadassah and particularly enjoyed swimming, playing the piano and visiting with family and friends. Esther was predeceased by husband, Herbert; and son, Raymond. She leaves two children, Richard Jonathan Brandwein of West Hartford and David Israel Brandwein and his wife, Ann, of West Hartford; and two grandchildren, Matthew Lev Brandwein of Watertown, MA, and Alix Brandwein of West Hartford. Esther is also survived by her brother, Carl Bennett and his wife, Dorothy, and her sisters-in-law, Neva Bennett, Helen (Brandwein) Adelsberg Weinberg, Estelle Brandwein and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by sister, Sarah Potash, brothers, Frank Bennett and Harry Bennett, sister-in-law, Sydell Bennett and brothers-in-law, Harry Potash, N. Arthur Brandwein and Samuel Adelsberg. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 9, at 10 a.m., in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, with Rabbi Yitzchok Adler of Beth David Synagogue officiating. Interment will follow in the Sharon Gardens/Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY at 1 p.m. Shiva will be observed at the home of David and Ann Brandwein, 17 Drury Lane, West Hartford, through Wednesday afternoon, September 12, with services at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday through Tuesday evenings.
