Esther (Jaffee) Weiner, 92, of Avon, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on October 19, 2019. Esther was the beloved wife of the late Stanley Weiner, her husband of seventy-two years. Born on December 6, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Barnett and Ida (Mopsick) Jaffee. Esther lived in the Hartford area all of her life and after Stanley retired they were snow-birds in Boynton Beach, Florida. She was a graduate of Weaver High School, class of 1944. She married Stanley in 1946 and then supported the family while he attended Columbia University. Esther is survived by her two daughters, Jane W. Freeman and her husband Hamilton of Avon, and Judith W. Greene and her husband Bernard of Farmington. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Lindsay Kent and Abigail Greene; her sister-in-law, Selma Weiner; her brother Jay Jaffee and his wife, Rita; her devoted niece, Geraldine Dinkin, and many other loving nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by two sisters, Roz Taylor and Sylvia Brightman; and three brothers, Jack Jaffee, Abraham Jaffee and Simon Jaffee. Esther was the matriarch of the Jaffee family. The telephone was her lifeline and she was always in touch with family and friends to whom she provided sincere and invaluable advice, love and caring. Esther was an accomplished bridge player (a silver life master) and a superlative cook and hostess. She enjoyed hosting many family holiday dinners and loved nothing more than a large family gathering at her home. Esther loved children, hers and yours, and was friendly and affectionate to all children she encountered. She was a gregarious and outgoing person with a positive outlook on life. For many years, Esther was an active fundraiser for the Jewish Federation Woman’s Division and for thirty-seven years, she was a proud member of the UConn Cancer Research Golf Committee for which she worked tirelessly. She was a member of the Congregation Beth Israel for over sixty years. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Robert Dicks, for his many years of excellent and compassionate care, and to her many caregivers, including Lucretia Grant and Elizabeth Cummings. Burial will be private. Funeral Services will be held in the Silberman Chapel of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at noon.
