Ethel ((Zinman)) Sondik

d. January 1, 1970

Ethel Sondik passed away peacefully at her home on August 21, 2017. She was nearly one hundred years old and was surrounded by her loved ones when she died.

She lived a long and fulfilling life, adored by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sister, brother, nieces and nephews. She cherished learning and encouraged her children to develop their skills, interests and passions.

She volunteered as an aide in the psychiatric unit at Hartford Hospital and gave considerable time to Beth El Temple where for several years she chaired the annual art show. Her keen aesthetic sense and love for the arts informed all aspects of her life.

She and Leon, her loving husband, were married for sixty-four years until his death in 2002. Ethel was born in New Britain, CT in 1917, daughter of the late Harry and Gussie (Katz) Zinman. She leaves behind her children, Barbara Perlmutter and husband, Louis, of New York, NY; Cindy Aron and her husband, Mark, of Chevy Chase, MD; Rick Sondik and his wife, Joanne Greene, of New York, NY; her sister Beverly Smigel; her brothers, Leonard Zinman and Murray Zinman; her sister-in-law, Selma Sondik Squires; her grandchildren, Kermit Perlmutter and his wife, Janet Ozzard; Eric Perlmutter and his wife, Linda; Samantha Aron Foti and her husband John; Lily Sondik, Leo Sondik and Lola Sondik; her great-grandchildren, J.J. Foti, Jacob Foti, Ella Perlmutter, Rae Perlmutter and Alexa Perlmutter.

“Don’t mourn me children, for I have had a wonderful life,” is what she always said. And she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, wife and most importantly a remarkable and caring person.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2017 at 1:00pm in the Beth El Temple Cemetery, 51 Jackson Street, Avon, CT with Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler and Rabbi James Rosen officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Brandeis University Women and Gender Studies Program. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT.
