Frederick Cohen

d. February 3, 2021

Frederick Cohen, 86, a Tariffville Connecticut resident for nearly 60 years, passed away at his home on February 3, 2021. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Fred was born in 1934 into difficult circumstances in the South Bronx, growing up surrounded by violence, poverty, and food insecurity. He managed to pass the entrance exam to Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, a public prep school focusing on math and science. Fred credited Stuyvesant with giving him a chance at a better life. A lifelong learner, Fred went on to earn a BS in mechanical engineering from the New York Maritime Academy, an MS in Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an MBA from Western New England College. Fred had a successful career as a mechanical engineer specializing in thermodynamics and heat transfer. He worked on the design of cooling systems for American fighter jet engines and commercial nuclear reactors. Throughout his life, Fred was active in sports, religious life, and charitable giving. He will be remembered for his openness to others, his generosity to family and friends, and for treating everyone he encountered with respect. Fred leaves behind his two sons, Paul Cohen and his wife Jane Cohen of Winsted, CT, and Allan Cohen and his partner Ann Overton of Cambridge, MA, his grandson Scott Cohen and his partner Melissa Strickland of Tariffville, and his four great grandchildren: Hailey, Logan, Arianna, and Parker. A special thank you to Sharon Mignot from Jewish Family Services for taking care of Fred and his late wife Dorothy in the final years of their lives. Funeral Services were held February 5 at the Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation Memorial Park. Arrangements were entrusted to the Weinstein Mortuary. Fred lies buried next to his wife Dorothy of nearly 60 years; they are now joined again together as eternal companions.
