Gerald Berg

d. January 1, 1970

Gerald (Jerry) Berg, 89, died on October 9, 2016 in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. He was born on November 8, 1926, in Bronx, NY to Julius and Bertha Berg. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx and attended City College of New York (CCNY) before being inducted into the Navy. He served as an electrician’s mate aboard mine sweepers in the Pacific theater during, and after, World War II. Following the Navy, he entered New York University (NYU) where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Arts Education. It was at NYU that Jerry met his late wife Joan Fields. They married in 1950 and moved to Wethersfield, CT shortly thereafter, where their children, Jeff and Michele were born.

Jerry and Joan were founding members and officers of Temple Beth Torah in Wethersfield. Jerry spent his career working in sales in the fabric, hardware, and machine tool industries. He retired from Cushman Industries in Hartford as Senior VP of Sales. Jerry lived a full and active life and was involved in synagogue affairs, bowling, softball, and tennis leagues (at 80 years old, he was ranked #1 in doubles in Southern California). He was a devoted NY Yankees, NY Giants football, and UCONN basketball fan.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Jeff Berg and Debra Paget of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter and son-in-law Michele and Rene Lerer of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; cherished grandchildren Samantha, Lowell, Blake, Ben, and Sam; his sister Sherley Dobkin of Sarasota, FL and many nephews and nieces.

The family thanks his team of physicians and caregivers at Hamilton Heights in West Hartford, CT; Tradition of the Palm Beaches and Morse Life Home Care in West Palm Beach for their compassionate care during the last few years.

The funeral service and burial will be held on Sunday October 16th at 11:30 am at Temple Beth Torah Memorial Park, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jerry’s memory may be directed to Temple Beth Torah, 130 Main St., Wethersfield, CT 06109 or to the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Foundation at www.ustafoundation.com.
