Retired Superior Court Judge Howard Scheinblum, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully on October 5, after a brief illness.

Born in Hartford on October 7, 1940, Howard was the fourth of eight children to parents Robert and Marie (Berger) Scheinblum. He grew up in Hartford’s Blue Hills neighborhood and attended Hartford public schools through the tenth grade at Weaver High School. Thereafter, he graduated from the Mount Hermon School, Middlebury College and Boston University Law School, where he was a senior editor of Law Review. His first year out of law school, Howard clerked for Justice James Shannon of CT’s Supreme Court. He was a member of the bars of CT, the U.S. federal district court and the U.S. Supreme Court. Howard remained in private practice from 1966 to 1990 when he was appointed to the CT Superior Court, where he served as a judge until his retirement in 2016.

Howard was predeceased not only by his parents but also his first wife, Judith and his son David, as well as his brothers Allan, Michael and Paul Scheinblum. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Fierberg, son Jeffrey Scheinblum and daughter-in-law Maureen McGuire; as well as his siblings, Sondra Kay, Tobi Freund, Peter (Cheryl) and Esther Yeck; sisters-in-law Terry, Lonnie and Marilyn Scheinblum; and many nieces and nephews.

Howard was a longstanding congregant of the Emanuel Synagogue, a Past Chancellor of the John Hay Lodge of the Knights of Pythias and a generous donor to many charities, especially those related to education and the arts in Hartford.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Judith Scheinblum Scholarship Fund at Watkinson School or the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Emanuel Synagogue on 160 Mohegan Drive in West Hartford and can also be viewed via livestream at www.emanuelsynagogue.org.
