Our beloved Hyla of Bloomfield, Connecticut passed away very suddenly but peacefully in Hartford on July 2, 2018. She was born on October 10, 1931 in Hartford to Ada (nee Solomon) and Morris Becker. She was raised in Hartford and spent her entire adult life in Bloomfield. Hyla is predeceased by the love of her life, her husband, Edward Stephens, her parents, Ada and Morris Becker, and her much beloved brother and sister-in-law, Faye Schloss Becker and Colman (Cal) Becker of Houston, Texas. She is survived by her adoring nephews, Thomas (Tommy) Becker and his partner, Jim Rosenfeld, of Houston and Stephen (Steve) Becker, and his wife, Pat, of Marble Falls, TX. Hyla leaves behind her loving niece, Colleen Crawford Becker of Houston, TX, her devoted great nephew, Brooks Crawford, of Alexandria, VA and his family, and her wonderful great niece, Candice Ray, of Sulphur, LA and her family. Her extended family included her kind and caring cousins, Myles and Suzanne Connell of Bloomfield, Peter Katz of West Hartford, Elaine Basch of West Hartford and Joanie Lefkin of West Hartford. Mara Whitman of West Hartford, her father, Bob Whitman, and their family were extraordinary friends. Hyla was a graduate of Weaver High School and secretarial school. Her entire career (over 35 years) was spent as a dedicated employee of Emhart Corporation (which later merged with Black and Decker). She began as a dedicated executive secretary and rose through the ranks to a well-respected management position in the research and development department. Hyla was a wonderful, loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece and cousin. She was extraordinarily bright, had a wonderful sense of humor and was one of the kindest, most caring people you would ever want to meet. She always put other people’s needs and feelings ahead of her own. Her devotion to her family was unwavering. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her family. In addition, she had a passion for traveling and began her international jaunts with 2 vacations to Europe in the ’50’s on the luxury liner, Queen Elizabeth. One of her favorite adventures was an extended tour of Europe taken with her brother and sister-in-law, Cal and Faye. Our deepest gratitude is extended to our dear cousins, Myles and Suzanne Connell. Special thanks go to Dr. Matt Neulander and Dr. Nha Duong and the staffs of the emergency department and ICU at Saint Francis Hospital. We are so grateful for the exceptional friendship of Mara Whitman and her family. Our sincerest thanks also go to Steven Zelman, John Murphy, Michael Weinstein and the entire staff of the Simsbury Inn.
Hyla’s family invites you to join them for a visitation and celebration of her life on Thursday, July 5 from 4:00 to 6:00 at Evergreens at the Simsbury Inn, 397 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT. In lieu of flowers, if you desire, please consider a donation in Hyla’s honor to The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research Foundation, 4605 Post Oak Place Suite 222, Houston, Texas 77027, att. Cynthia Adkins or the charity of your choosing. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary of West Hartford.
