Ida (Sandler) Brody

Ida Eleanor (Sandler) Brody was born on June 9, 1908 in Brooklyn, NY. She moved to Hartford as a child and graduated from Hartford Public High School. For the last dozen years she was a resident of McLeans in Simsbury where she died. She was well as recently as Mother’s Day and on her 97th birthday. Mrs. Brody devoted her life to community service. As a child of eight years old she delivered Sabbath dinners to poor Jewish families in Hartford. She helped organize the first blood bank in Hartford and in the 1970’s helped organize a job bank in West Hartford. One of the jobs was so appealing she took it herself in the president’s office of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She was on the auxiliary board of the Hebrew Home which honored her for her years of volunterism. She was also a volunteer for the United Jewish Appeal and worked for many years at the Jewish Community Center. A life member of Hadassah she held leadership positions when her children were young. Mrs. Brody and her family have been members of the Emanuel Synagogue for more than 50 years. She delivered Meals on Wheels for many years and she and her husband volunteered for the Red Cross referring people in need to the proper organization. Her husband, Benjamin Brody died in 1989, they had been married for 52 years. Her two sisters and a brother predeceased her. Mrs. Brody leaves two daughters, Abby Jane Brody of East Hampton, NY, and Anne Martha Brody of India; a son, David J. Brody of Waltham, MA; three grandsons, Jonathan, Max, and Sam; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be TODAY, 2 p.m. at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery, East Granby with Rabbi David Small officiating.
