Ida Levy, 92 of West Hartford, CT passed away December 18, 2020 from complications due to Covid-19. Born in Vienna, Austria on April 10, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Chaim and Anna Sack. She was the widow of Henry Levy. Ida is survived by her children: daughter Esther Tafrizi and husband Shmuel of Brooklyn, NY, her son Joseph Levy and wife Helayne of Venice, CA and daughter Ann McCarthy and husband Kevin of Westbrook, CT. Ida also leaves 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Besides her parents Chaim and Anna and her husband, Henry, Ida was also predeceased by her brother Max Sack. The remainder of her family perished in the Holocaust. Ida’s childhood was cut short beginning when she was ten years old. At that time, she and her family fled Vienna, Austria after witnessing the horrific Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. Fleeing to Thessaloniki Greece her family was then imprisoned by the Nazis. She survived the Holocaust and met Henry, her husband of 65 years after they were liberated in 1945 from Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz Concentration Camps. They were married in Greece and immigrated to the United States in 1951 where Henry and Ida sought new opportunities that enabled them to successfully “rebuild from the ashes” in the Survivor community of West Hartford, CT. As a war refugee, Ida was denied a formal advanced education, but learned to speak 6 languages and was an accomplished homemaker and partner in her husband’s businesses. Having experienced hunger and starvation, she welcomed all to her home and would not allow anyone visiting to go without a meal and her famous Greek cookies. Ida and Henry worked tirelessly to promote education and awareness of the Holocaust throughout their lives in the USA. Despite the events that occurred to Ida early in her life, she was able to have many loving and happy years with her family and friends. Ida and Henry spent most of their life in CT, but also enjoyed spending several years in Boynton Beach, Florida. After Henry had passed away in 2012, Ida moved back to CT to be closer to her family.
Due to the pandemic, there are no public funeral services. Shiva and services to be scheduled via zoom announcement. Burial will take place in Boynton Beach, Florida.
