Jay S. Horenstein, age 89, of Bloomfield, CT, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2019. Born and raised in NYC, he was the son of the late Syd (Hefter) and the late Louis Horenstein. After attending City College in NYC, Jay served in the Army. A natural salesman, he then opened a retail wine and liquor business in Manhattan, where he became a fixture in the neighborhood for the next 50 years. He was a mentor and an exceptionally kind boss to his employees, as well as a friend to many residents of NYC’s Upper East Side. Jay was known for his warmth, charm and snappy one-liners. In 2010, Jay and his wife, Doris, moved to Connecticut. Jay spent many hours sitting in the dugout at the West Hartford Little League fields, wearing either his NY Yankees or his NY Giants cap, cheering on his grandson and teammates.In April 2018, Jay lost his beloved wife, Doris E. (Brown) Horenstein, of more than 55 years. Jay now leaves behind his son Kenneth P. Horenstein, daughter-in-law Lauren Krasnow and grandchildren Josh and Rachel Horenstein of West Hartford; and his son John D. Horenstein, daughter-in-law Melissa and grandchildren Emily, Katie and Jacob of Plainview, Long Island.Funeral services will be at 11:30 am on Wednesday, May 22, at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., with Rabbi Jeffrey Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park of Temple Sinai, 41 West Hartford Rd., Newington, and the family will thereafter receive relatives and friends inside Temple Sinai.
