Jean ((Glassman)) Sanofsky

d. January 1, 1970

Jean Sanofsky of West Hartford died on December 18, 2018 at age 100. People will be surprised by her longevity, for she always looked younger than her age. Jean was the daughter of Ida and Sam Glassman and attended school in East Hartford. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, partner and friend. “Miss Jean,” as she was known to many, taught dance lessons to generations of girls and boys in her home studio in West Hartford. She also worked outside the home and was an active member of the PTA, the Emanuel Synagogue Sisterhood, the American Medical Center at Denver, and the 55-0 Club. She juggled her multiple roles with energy, grace, and love. It was the norm for Jean to invite family and friends over for dinner and to host large family gatherings. In her later years Jean lived at Hoffman SummerWood, where she enjoyed outings, theater excursions, programs, and games such as Rummikub, Bingo, Mah Jongg and Canasta. She was a “regular” at the West Hartford Senior Center and attended the ballroom dance sessions every Thursday.

Jean leaves behind her beloved daughters and their husbands, Paula & Michael Young of Farmington, ME, and Sheila & Jonathan Mellitz of West Hartford, CT. She also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren: Megan Jean Morris, Tyler Morris, and Dan & Kate Mellitz and their daughter Mackenzie Mellitz.

Jean was predeceased by Nathan Sanofsky, her adored husband of 33 years, and Simon Bernstein, her treasured companion of 20 years. She was also predeceased by her siblings and Nate’s siblings and their spouses: Dave and Mildred Glassman; Abe & Edith Glassman; Rose & Sol Adler, Cele & Harry Stoltz; Harry & Ruth Sanofsky; and Jack & Gert Sanofsky.

Jean was the type of person whose glass was always “half full” rather than “half empty.” She had a positive outlook on life, looked to the future, and was stubbornly independent. Special thanks for their care, friendship and support of Jean over the last several years go to the staff of Hoffman SummerWood, who made daily life a pleasure. Particular thanks go to Patricia Lyons, who looked after Jean with good spirit, great skill and compassion.

A graveside funeral will be held at the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Tpke. Ext., Wethersfield, CT at 1:30 on Wednesday, Dec.19. The family will welcome friends and family to the Mellitz home afterward and that evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. They will also be at Hoffman Summerwood on Thursday from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be sent to Hoffman SummerWood, 160 Simsbury Rd., West Hartford, CT 06117.
