Kathleen A. (Mitchell) Mendelsohn, 85, formerly of Bloomfield and Avon, passed away on Saturday May 14, 2018 at Inova Hospital in Fairfax Virginia, after a brief illness. Kathy was born in Troy ME on March 2, 1933 to Mr. Walter J. Mitchell and Mrs. Ida E. (Hale) Mitchell. She lived during a time, and in a place, that gave her the opportunity for many “firsts,” and was the kind of intelligent and resourceful woman who could make good on her opportunities. She graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1950, the University of Maine in 1954, then started her career at Connecticut General Life Insurance Company in 1955. She married Louis I. Mendelsohn in 1958, having met him because his desk was behind hers at their workplace, and they remained together until his passing in 2011. Intelligent, athletic, and often outspoken, Kathy was a natural feminist and corporate “glass breaker.” She built her career as an insurance executive for many years after raising two children. After that she and Lou lived a long and enjoyable retirement together, dividing their time between New England and Florida. Kathy enjoyed golf, tennis, travel, and time spent with family and friends. She had affinities for red sports cars, the Larry Bird Boston Celtics, the Tom Brady New England Patriots, interior decorating, cooking and gardening. She is survived by her son Eric and his wife Emily; her daughter Carrie and her husband Larry; her grandchildren, Sarah, Leah, Joey, and Lexi; and many friends in Connecticut, Vermont, and down south.
