Lillian ('Lil' (Leibert)) Hillman

Lillian (Leibert) Hillman, 106 years of age, of West Hartford, CT, passed away on Thursday, December 8, 2016. Lillian was predeceased by her beloved husband of 30 of years, Nathan Hillman her son, Henry Hillman and daughter Carolynn Hillman-Harrigan. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Morris and Sarah (Warshovsky) Leibert. She was a graduate of Weaver High School and worked as a bookkeeper at the Hebrew Home for the Aged before her marriage. She was an instructor at the Henry George School of Economics, a president of the local chapters of B’nai B’rith and the Golden Chain and held various offices in the local chapter of the American Jewish Congress. She was a highly involved member of the Beth El Temple, an avid bridge player and literacy volunteer. She began writing poetry at the age of 102 and a few of her poems have been published in anthologies. She was the poster person for the Connecticut low-sight awareness program in 2014 and receipt of the 2015 CALA Distinguished Resident Accomplishment Award. She leaves; her daughters, Shelly Warwick of New York, NY and Sara Schutz and son-in-law , Kory Schutz of Moodus, CT: and her four beloved grandchildren, Nurelle Hillman-Harrigan, Robyn Hillman-Harrigan; Heather Darnell and husband Adam; and Tai Schutz, and great-grandson Nathaniel Darnell. She was pre-deceased by brothers Manny and Herbert Leibert and sister Rose Care. Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Friday December 9, 2016 in the Sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., West Hartford, CT with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in the Beth El Temple Cemetery, 51 Jackson St., Avon, CT. The family will receive relatives and friends at Apt. 237 160 Simsbury Road (Hoffman Summerwood) from noon to 8:00 pm on Sunday and from 3:00 - 8:00 pm on Monday and Tuesday, with services at 7:00 pm each day. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Henry Matthew Hillman Youth Scholarship Fund of the Beth El Temple which provides financial assistance to attend USY programs to a deserving member of Beth El’s USY chapter or the American Jewish Congress.
