Marcia (Heller) Bok Anderson, 85, of Hartford died peacefully December 9, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She was predeceased by husband Paul Anderson. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of Samuel and Pauline (Dorsky) Heller.Marcia was professor emeritus at the UCONN School of Social Work. A social worker, mentor, and community activist par excellence, she was an academic and engaged advocate for social justice. Marcia published numerous scholarly works on topics such as homelessness, HIV, and community-based approaches to alleviating income inequality. She testified frequently at the CT legislature and served on boards of directors of a wide range of local organizations. Among her many accomplishments, Marcia was named Social Worker of the Year by the CT Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. In 2017, she was honored by CLARO (CT Latina/os Achieving Rights and Opportunities) for her contributions to the LGBTQI Latino community. Her career spanned more than six decades, and her intellect, enthusiasm, idealism, and commitment to social justice – especially in fighting against racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination – positively affected countless lives. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends in Hartford, the Berkshires and Sarasota, Florida, . She leaves her children, Ruthanne Marcus (John Garbalosa) of Cheshire, Jane Marcus (Carlos Delgado) of Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Penny Leto of Hartford, Peter Anderson (Betty Webber) of Tolland, and her sister, Rosilyn Heller of Los Angeles, California; beloved grandchildren Lonnie, Todd, Mark, Alejandro, Cristina, and Elizabeth; and great-grandchildren Jason Todd, Maizy, and Rowan, and niece Annie Heller-Gutwillig and her family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 13 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to progressive organizations advocating for social justice.
