Max Javit passed away peacefully in his home in Boca Raton, Florida on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. The son of Jacob and Rose Josowitz, he lived in Brooklyn NY throughout his childhood until attending college at Michigan State University where he received his BA in Economics. He then went on to earn a masters degree in Psychiatric Social Work from the University of Michigan. Max served in the US armed forces as an officer and Chief of Psychiatric Social Work in a German mental health clinic after World War II. After a brief stint as a social worker in Hartford, CT, he founded Max Javit Real Estate Development located in Farmington CT where he focused on developing commercial properties. A philanthropist and active member of his community, Max served on the Board of Governors of Ben Gurion University, was honored by the Jewish Association for Community Living, and received the Torch of Liberty Award’ from ADL for his long history of community service.Max will always be remembered as a caring and generous man, eager to help those in need. His sense of humor was renowned throughout the Boca Raton community where he lived most of the year.Max is survived by his wife of 64 years Rachel, his children Sharona, Daniel, and Deborah, and his 2 grandchildren Samuel and Isabel.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, January 27, 2019 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Jackson Street Ext., Avon, CT. Following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at 40 Balfour Drive in West Hartford Connecticut from 6 to 8 pm and on Monday from 5 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Anti-Defamation League or Ben Gurion University in Israel.
