Murray (J.) Hershman

Murray J. Hershman, 57 years of age, died Wednesday, August 6, 2008 in Prescott, AZ. Born in Bristol, CT, he was the son of the late Harry H. Hershman, M.D. and Beverly (Cohen) Hershman. He attended Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA (Class of 1970), received his B.A. from George Washington University, Washington, DC (Class of 1974) and J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, MI (Class of 1978). Mr. Hershman was an accomplished tax attorney and tax accountant and recognized throughout the country for his special expertise in the tax controversy area. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Bar and the US Tax Court; and past member of the American Bar Association and the Worcester County Bar Association, Sections on Taxation and Bankruptcy. Always active in the Worcester community, he served as a member of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee and Chairman of the Finance and Endowment Committees of the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusetts. Murray, who played basketball at George Washington University, was head coach for the Jewish Community Center. He loved not only the game and being in the gym but also working with kids. He was also Assistant Basketball coach at the Yavapai High School in Prescott, AZ of which he was very proud. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Yeshiva Academy. Mr. Hershman was also an adjunct professor in the MBA program at Clark University teaching courses in taxation and business law and was the creator of the “Tax Minute” radio and television programs that were broadcast throughout Central Massachusetts. He was also a member of the Level Masonic Lodge in Shrewsbury, MA. He leaves his beloved wife, Penny Hershman; his son, Adam Hershman of Hong Kong; his daughter, Samantha Hershman of Boston, MA; his two sisters, Maxine Green of New York, NY, and Elaine Hershman of New York, NY; nieces and nephews, Rachel Silverman and her husband Daniel, Micah Green and his wife Vardit, and Joshua Green; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Marin, Jaden, Emma, Elijah and Noah. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 10, 2008 at 10:30 am in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Yitzchok Adler officiating. Interment will follow in Beth Israel Synagogue Cemetery, Bristol. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to charities working to prevent and cure cancer.
