Paul Grande

d. August 2, 2021

Paul Grande, 87, of West Hartford CT passed away on August 2, 2021 at UConn John Dempsey Hospital after an extended illness. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 25, 1933, the son of the late Isadore and Ruth (Newman) Grande. He made his home with his wife Nancy Grande, in Connecticut, Virginia and The Villages of Florida during their 37 years of marriage. Paul graduated from Madison HS, Brooklyn, NY in 1951, followed by earning a BS in Metallurgy Engineering at Purdue University, where he was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity. He continued his education at RPI obtaining an MS in Engineering and an MBA. His education led the way to a successful career as a Metallurgical Engineer with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft for 37 years; retiring in 1993. During a portion of his career, he had the opportunity to travel across the world including China and Africa.

Paul treasured vacations with his family going back to his childhood at the summer cabin known as “Casa Grande” located on the Schroon River in Warrensburg NY. There, they would fish, hike and swim, building a history of generational memories. Paul was an avid tennis player and loved a good game of golf. He enjoyed reading, listening to Broadway show music, classic movies and watching UConn basketball and football games.

Paul’s most cherished role in his life was that of husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend. He is survived by his wife Nancy Grande, of West Hartford; his loving children, Allan Grande (Cynthia) of Colchester CT, Sara Gavens (Andrew) of Niskayuna, NY, Ian Grande (Richard) of Bloomfield CT, and adoring granddaughters, Melissa Gavens, Jennifer Gavens and Molly Gavens. He is survived by his stepdaughters, Robin Hirtle (Russ) of Granby, CT and Sandra Schultz (Ken) of West Hartford, CT along with their children Robert (Mallory) and Gretchen.
He leaves his sisters Dayle Herstik of Monroe, NJ and Helene Epstein (Albert) of Edison, NJ to cherish his memory, along with his niece, Laurie and nephews Jonathan, Neil, Ivan and Barry.
Paul is predeceased by the mother of his children Sonia Berke and his brother in-law Lawrence Herstik.

Paul was blessed to live a life filled with loving family memories. He will be remembered as a kind and gentle man, who was a stellar role model. He fought fiercely through years of medical challenges later in life. He will be missed beyond our words. Our family would like to thank the health care providers of UConn John Dempsey Hospital for their valiant efforts, as well as Seasons Hospice for their gentle care.
