Phyllis (Selzer) Berman

d. April 13, 2020

1939 - 2020) Phyllis Berman passed away peacefully on April 13, 2020 at a hospital in Hartford, CT after a brief battle with Coronavirus. Born Phyllis Lorraine Selzer on September 9, 1939 in the Bronx, NY to parents Sol and Shirley, Phyllis experienced a wonderful childhood in the Pelham Parkway section of the Bronx. An only child, Phyllis was doted on by her parents and her Uncle “Ziggy”, and enjoyed dancing and life “under the L”. She graduated Christopher Columbus High School, around which time she met her soul mate, Barry Berman. It was love at first sight and the couple exchanged their vows at the Park Terrace in the Bronx on April 4, 1959. Phyllis and Barry began their new life together in Whitestone, Queens, where they spent their next ten years and had three sons: Jeffrey, Garry and Eric. In 1969 the family relocated to Nanuet, New York, where they built a loving home and became a part of a close-knit community. Over the next 25 years, Phyllis worked as a travel agent and dental office manager, but she always valued being a mother above all else. Phyllis and Barry moved on from Nanuet in 1994, settling into the Winston Towers in Cliffside Park, NJ. After another 15 happy years, the couple moved in 2009, deciding to spend their next chapter at the Wanaque Reserve in NJ.
Phyllis will be remembered as an animated, strong-willed and funny woman who was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. Before her issues with dementia she enjoyed a competitive game of Mahjong, Broadway and completing the Sunday Times crossword puzzle. She cherished sharing holiday customs like her famous matzo ball soup, doting on her beloved pets, and especially spending time with and spoiling her seven beloved grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Barry Berman, of Simsbury, CT, Phyllis is survived by her sons Jeff Berman, and his wife Kerri, of Cape Elizabeth, ME; Garry Berman, and his wife Marianne, of Simsbury, CT; Eric Berman, and his ex-wife April Berman, of Wayne, NJ; and her seven grandchildren: Benjamin, Samantha, Jackson, Zoe, Samuel, Camden and Wesley.
