Richard (A.) Cohn

Richard A. Cohn, 60, of West Hartford, died Thursday, (October 12, 2006) at Hartford Hospital of complications from leukemia. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Sandra Morgan, and his daughters, Heather Cohn of New York City and Ensign Catherine Cohn, U.S. Navy, of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by his father, Marvin M. Cohn of Encinitas, CA and brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Jerry Cohn of China Lake, CA. He was predeceased by his mother, Muriel Cohn, and his stepmother, Mary Cohn. Richard was born in Chicago and grew up in Sacramento, CA. He received a bachelors degree from Harvard University, 1969 and an M.B.A. from Stanford University, 1972, where he also did his doctoral work. He taught finance at M.I.T. and the Universities of Illinois and British Columbia. In 2004, he retired from his teaching career after 19 years as Professor of Finance at the University of Hartford where he received the distinguished Bent Award for Scholarly Creativity. Richard will be remembered for his innovative research in finance and in particular for his work on the murky mysteries of the stock market, specifically a set of papers that he co-wrote with his colleague Franco Modigliani, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1985. He also made a significant contribution as an expert witness in the area of regulation of casualty insurance premiums. In keeping with Richard’s wishes, there will be a private service and burial in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. The family will receive visitors at the home, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between 5-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an educational or religious organization of the donor’s choice. The Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, is in charge of the arrangements.
