It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Richard (Dick) Glater, 76 of Newington CT on Tuesday, Jan 9th 2018. He was born in Hartford on September 20th, 1941 the son of Sally Bogard and Irving Glater. In addition to his loving wife Iris Shoopilsky Glater of 55 years, Dick is survived by his daughter Michelle Beth Glater, seven grandchildren, (Joshua, Andrew, Samantha, Nathan, Jonathan, Max, and Noah); his five great grandchildren, (Larka, Raoden, Asher, Emma and Aubree. He was pre-deceased by his daughter Debra Lynn Glater and his brothers, Samuel and Morris. Also left to mourn are his brothers Edward(Dianne) William(Marge), other family and a host of friends. Dick served in the United States Army from 1958-1961 in Germany. Re-locating to Connecticut, he was a long time employee at Hamden Chrystler/Plymouth as a sales manager. Dick held membership in the Connecticut Street Legends Car Club. He took immense pride in his corvette spending hours spit shining it. Dick was a loyal Red-Socks and Giants fan. His Starbucks acquaintances became his dear friends and he and Iris delighted in preparing cook-outs for large gatherings of people several times a year and they hosted an open house each New Years Day. Dick demonstrated remarkable courage in the face of his illness and never let it destroy his optimistic outlook on life. All who knew him knew that he was an independent spirit with a soft heart and a big personality. The family extends gratitude to the medical staff at UConn health for the care they gave to Dick over a long period of time.
Final arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Friday, January 12th at 10:30am at 640 Farmington Ave, Hartford. Sandra Mattucci will offer a reflection celebrating Dick and his remarkable life. Military honors will be accorded to Dick for his years of service. Shiva will be observed at Dick and Iris’ home on Reservoir road in Newington for three days. Cremated remains will be buried in a private ceremony at the Military cemetery in Middletown at a later date.
