Rosalie Byer, 90 years of age, died Sunday, April 10th, 2016. She was born Rose Lillian Michlin on October 19, 1925 in New Britain, Ct, the daughter of Hyman and Ida (Levy) Michlin. She will be remembered by many for her devout friendship, honesty, sense of humor and loving nature. As a child, Rosalie’s quest for adventure drew her, whenever possible, into the embracing arms of her Brooklyn, New York clan. Eleven wonderful aunts and uncles and a multitude of cousins supported her dreams that helped her grow to become the amazing woman that she was. She was a voracious reader, a passionate player of Mah Jong and a master knitter. Rosalie was a wife, mother, devoted friend and a RN, but best of all she was a grandmother, “Bubba”, to her eight beloved grandchildren.
Rosalie married Seymour Byer in 1948 after a long childhood courtship and the tumultuous interruptions of World War II. Their marriage of 67 years sadly ended in the Spring of 2015 with Seymour’s passing. Seymour and Rosalie started their long life together upon moving to Washington D.C. where Seymour attended George Washington University Medical School and Rosalie worked at GW University Hospital as an OB GYN nurse. It was there that they began their family, happily welcoming two children, and forged their foundation for the next 60 years. After medical school, Seymour’s internship and residency brought them home to New Britain and a long tenure at New Britain General Hospital, also Rosalie’s nursing school alma mater, and their next three children arrived to make the family complete.
Rosalie touched the lives of many and she will always be remembered as the anchor of her family, a woman of her word and a stalwart friend. Rosalie was predeceased by her husband, Seymour Byer, MD, and her brother Earl Michlin. She will be missed by her sister Marilyn Herman, her children Jeffrey Byer, Carol (Frank) Byer-Alcorace, Alisa (Steven) Germaine, Richard (Janet) Byer, Peter (Karen) Byer and eight beloved grandchildren: Gabriel and Alex Byer-Alcorace, Haley and Adam Germaine, James Byer, and Jack (Christine), Joseph and Claire Byer and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, April 17th, at 2:30 PM at Beth Alom Cemetery, Allen St, New Britain, CT. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT.
