Ruth Herrup, 100, died peacefully on March 1st at St. Mary Home in West Hartford. She was born October 12, 1915 to Samuel Nathan Rosenstein and Elsie Tarlow Rosenstein in Bensonhurst , Brooklyn. Ruth graduated from High School in East Orange, New Jersey before moving to Manhattan where she pursued piano studies at Greenwich House Music School.
In 1946 she married Max Silberstein. They lived in Rockville Centre, Long Island and had two children, Margo (born in 1948) and Alex (born in 1949). In 1957 the family moved to Westport, Connecticut. Ruth was active in Hadassah.
After Max’s death in 1961 the family moved to West Hartford. Ruth wrote publicity for the JCC Ann Randall Committee and the Hartford Stage Company. She married Albert Herrup in 1964. They travelled together extensively until his death in 1980.
Throughout her life, Ruth was an appreciator of music and art. In addition to playing the piano, she painted in watercolor and in later years took up collage. She frequently organized musical gatherings for musician friends. Ruth was a docent at the Mark Twain House and the Wadsworth Atheneum, serving as docent president 1982-84. She had a creative spirit.
She is survived by her daughter Margo Silberstein of Washington, DC, and her son, daughter-in-law and grandchild Alex, Lynne and Zacharie Silberstein of San Francisco.
