Ruth Doris Schloss passed away on July 17, 2019. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday at Duncaster LifeCare Retirement Community with thirty family members from across the country.
Born on June 24, 1919, in Queens, NY, to Harry and Laura Ginsberg, she was married for 72 years to Walter A. Schloss, MD.
A devoted mother, much beloved for her caring nature, Ruth is survived by her six children (and spouse): Nancy Marks (Mark), Jane Phelan (Garrett), Wendy Benger (Craig), Peggy Mendelson (Alan), Andrew Schloss (Irene Mitri), and Barbara Schloss. Ruth was the proud grandmother of eight and a great-grandmother of ten.
After graduating from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, Ruth taught at the School of Ethical Culture in New York City. She applied her love of the arts to her beautiful garden, and supported multiple local arts organizations, including the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford Stage Company, and the Hartford Symphony.
As an active member of the Alliance Française and Le Cercle Français, she enjoyed reading French literature and speaking French.
Ruth worked for many years for Connecticut Landmarks at the historic Buttolph-Williams House in Wethersfield, CT, and the Butler-McCook House & Garden in Hartford, CT. Committed to serving the community, she o?ered her help as a literacy volunteer, as well as providing assistance for Meals on Wheels.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, July 19 at 11:30am at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, CT.
