Samuel Cohen

After 99 years, Samuel Cohen decided it was time to leave us. He retired three years ago from going to the office daily, and blames his “falling apart” on boredom. Born in New Britain CT on June 9th 1923 to Abe and Ida Cohen, he joined the service in 1943. Unable to be a pilot due to the lack of sight in one eye, he served as a medic on the USS Henry Gibbins. Honorably discharged two years later, he met and married the love of this life, Rita Helfand Cohen. He opened The Arrow Store in Waterbury CT, was flooded out in 1956, and opened the Saxony Deli in West Hartford, where he settled with his family. After selling the popular deli, buying and managing Real Estate with his sons became his passion until finally selling his last properties on Pratt Street in Hartford in 2019; at which time he was one of the last remaining independent landlords left. His winters in Boynton Beach with his wife antiquing and repairing his neighbors’ homes, dining out with friends, and eating Hot Fudge Sundaes with family were some of his favorite things. A founding member of Beth El Temple, a long time supporter of the Vets, The Chabad House, and many other Jewish services; Judaism and family were his focus. He leaves his three kids, Danny (Jackie), Sheila and Jonathan (Georgianne), his Grandchildren Josh (Evelyn), Emily (Laurie), Amanda, Benjamin and Samantha, and his Great Grandchildren Jacob and Maddie. He also leaves his nephew Mel (Marilyn) among many others. He lost so many loved ones over the years including his sisters Sadie, Esther, Gertie & Sima, special friend Bobbe, and Sheila’s Sidney. Thanks to his friends at Hoffman Summerwood. Donations can be made to Beth El Temple in his name. Funeral arrangements are private and entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary. Contributions: Donations can be made to Beth El Temple in his name.
