Sara J. Kaplan, 47 years of age, of West Hartford, CT, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2018. She was the beloved wife of Ken Malley. Born in Hartford, CT she was the daughter of Rhoda (Zandan) Kaplan and the late Allen Kaplan.
After graduating from Newington High School in 1989, Sara attained her Masters Degree from the University of Connecticut. She recently earned her sixth year degree from San Diego State University. For many years, she taught social studies at Suffield High School, with a focus on Asian Studies. During her summers Sara enjoyed working with the younger children by teaching wood working at The Summer Place at the University of Hartford. Sara was a member of the Board of Education at the Emanuel Religious School, coordinated the Best Buddies program at Suffield High School and was a Brownie troop leader at Aiken School. Sara loved nature and enjoyed many afternoons taking hikes, riding her bike and being outdoors.
In addition to her husband and mother, Sara is survived by her sons, Zev Beigel and Aaron Malley; her daughter, Alanna Malley all of West Hartford, CT; her sisters, Ilene Kohlun and her husband, David of Glastonbury, CT and Tammi Kaplan and her husband, LeVance James, of Manchester, CT; brother and sister in laws Steve Malley and his wife Bonnie; Dave Malley and his wife Margie; Elise Falkin and Leslie and Michael Fialkiewicz; Mother in law Barbara Malley-Falkin; nieces and nephew Jacob and Matthew Malley; Alex and Sarah Healy; Brexten James; Timothy and Samantha Kohlun.
Funeral services will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in the Sanctuary of the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Dr., West Hartford, CT with Rabbi David J. Small officiating. Interment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, CT. Immediately following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at the Emanuel Synagogue at 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford, CT. Due to the High Holy days there will be no formal Shiva. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel Synagogue Religious School Fund or the Yellow Candle Fund, c/o the Emanuel Synagogue Brotherhood .
