Saul ('Sy') Dresner

d. January 1, 1970

Saul “Sy” Dresner, of Boca Raton, FL, former owner and operator of WCCC AM & FM, the popular longtime hard rock & personality radio station in Hartford, CT., passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019 at the age of 89. Sy and his wife of 60 years, Edith (Turkisch) Dresner lived with their family in Newburgh, NY and then West Hartford, CT for many years before moving to Bloomfield, then Boca Raton. Born in Brooklyn, NY on Sept. 21,1929, Sy was the son of the late Samuel and Rose Dresner. He attended Boys High School in Brooklyn, NY and was a graduate of New York University. His love for radio began when he was a young boy. After graduating from NYU, Sy and his brother Al licensed, engineered and built radio stations in upstate New York, including WWHG, Hornell, NY; WBNR, Beacon, NY; and WELV/WDRE, Ellenville, NY. In the late 1960s, they entered the larger Hartford market and bought WCCC Radio from the Electra Corporation that had purchased it from heritage jeweler Bill Savitt. Sy’s beloved WCCC Radio was the culmination of his lifelong love of radio, broadcast engineering and his legacy in the radio industry. From having a disc jockey lock himself in the studio to play the same song for three days to hiring “shock jock” Howard Stern, Sy was always looking to entertain and grow WCCC’s faithful listening audience. Prior to its sale in 1998 after 28 years of ownership, WCCC was one of the country’s last locally owned and operated large market radio stations. He had been a longtime member of Beth El Temple in West Hartford and was a former Beth El President. In addition to his wife Edith, Sy is survived by two sons, Ron Dresner and his wife, Stacey, of West Hartford; and Steven Dresner of Washington, D.C.; four granddaughters, Nicole, Gabrielle, Hayley and Harley; a sister, Bess Bosin of Danbury, CT; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Alfred Dresner. The funeral will be held on Monday, January 7 at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary at Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., in West Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow at 12:15 p.m. at the Beth El Cemetery, Jackson Street Ext., Avon, followed by a reception at Beth El Temple at 1 p.m., and a gathering TBA at 7 p.m. Friends will also be received on Tuesday, January 8 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. in the Beth El Temple Community Room followed by a minyan service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
