Shirley C. Leibert, age 96, of West Hartford passed away peacefully on April 18, 2018. Shirley was born in Brooklyn, New York and was the daughter of the late Herman and Mildred Cantor. In addition to being a Founding Member of Beth El Temple in West Hartford and President of Haddassah, Shirley owned and operated a designer clothing shop in Avon, CT for many years. Shirley was predeceased by her first husband Melvin and by her second husband Manuel M. Leibert, with whom she was married for 42 years. Her greatest joy was celebrating life with family and friends. Always well dressed, high heals and top knot bun in her hair, Shirley remained deeply proud and determined throughout life. Shirley loved traveling and community events. She will be remembered with fondness and deeply missed. She is survived by her children, Richard and Joyce Leibert of West Hartford and Peter Leibert of Newington; grandchildren, A.J and Deborah Kritzman of West Hartford, Mathew and Sarah Williams of Simsbury, Nathan and Cheryl Mahoney of Avon and 7 great grandchildren, Sally, Sophie and Sadie Kritzman, Harrison and Miriam Mahoney and Henry and George Williams. In keeping with Shirley’s wishes a private graveside service with interment was held at Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon, CT.
A private period of mourning will be observed by the family. The family will receive close relatives and friends immediately after the funeral and again at 7 pm Sunday evening at the home of Richard & Joyce Leibert. The family wishes to thank Hamilton Heights and St Mary’s and their staff for Shirley’s care and comfort they provided. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mandell JCC or Beth El Temple.
