Shirley (Solomon) Rosenfield

Shirley Solomon Rosenfield, 100, of West Hartford, formally of Hartford, Windsor and Bloomfield, passed away peacefully to be with her beloved Frankie on December 14, 2018. She had been the adoring wife of Frank Rosenfield for almost 73 years until his death on September 5, 2013. She is survived by her loving daughter, Sandra Rosenfield Goldberg and son-in-law Bruce Goldberg. She was a cherished Grandma to David and Adrienne Goldberg, Jeffrey and Rebecca Goldberg and Lori (Goldberg) and Darrin Gleeman. She was also the much-loved Bubbie to her seven great-grandchildren Maddie and Kate Goldberg, Zachary, Shoshana and Gabriel Goldberg and Jonah and Ben Gleeman. She also leaves to mourn her brother and sister-in-law Donald and Roberta Baggish whom she dearly loved. Having lost her father, Samuel Solomon, when she was only 5 years old, she was also predeceased by her beloved mother and father Ruth (Solomon) and Rubin Baggish, brother and sister-in-law George and Beatrice Solomon, and brothers and sisters-in-law Hyman and Judith Rosenfield and Ruth (Rosenfield) and Sidney Stein. She also leaves many adored nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Shirley was born in Hartford on April 20, 1918, and lived in the Greater Hartford area her entire life, graduating from Weaver High School, class of 1936 B. She loved reminiscing about her high school years, keeping in touch with high school friends and was very active in keeping records and putting together her Weaver class reunions. Over her working years, she was a dedicated and hard working bookkeeper and secretary in the shoe department of Wise Smith and Co., Epstein Brothers Refrigeration, and Lebon Press. After retirement, she and Frank spent 24 years volunteering at the Hebrew Home and Hospital, receiving the Volunteers of the Year Award for their non-wavering commitment. She was a member of the Hartford Mutual Society and active in the Seniors Club at the Greater Hartford JCC. Shirley was a product of the depression and one of the last of her generation. She lived a life of thrift and sacrificing for others. Nothing gave her more pleasure than cooking for and entertaining family and friends with her simple but tasty recipes. Her tuna casserole will never be duplicated no matter how hard we try. Her family will always treasure her recipes we put together in her Nothing Fancy cookbook. In fact, the term Nothing Fancy totally defines her. Her jewels were her family and her treasure was being together with them and taking pride in their accomplishments. She was intelligent with a quick mind, she was feisty, she was a good and loyal friend and always said her mind. She was the best mother, daughter, sister, niece, and aunt that anyone could ever desire and her strong presence will be greatly missed.

Shirley’s family gives endless thanks and appreciation to her extraordinary caretaker, Patricia Cambridge, whose love, caring and dedication gave so much comfort to Shirley and her family. Pat made sure Shirley was beautifully dressed every day, hair coiffed and makeup done. Pat gave Shirley her dignity and Shirley’s family peace of mind. The family also gives special thanks to Beverly McKenzie and Patty Gramuglia for their caring support, as well as thanks to all the nurses and staff at the Hebrew Center for Health and Rehabilitation for the care they gave to Shirley in her final years.

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the Hartford Mutual Society Cemetery in East Granby. A memorial period will be observed following the interment at the home of Sandy and Bruce Goldberg through Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice
