Sidney (E. 'Sid') Gornish

Sidney Gornish, 89 years of age, of East Hartford, Connecticut and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, beloved husband of Carole Banks Gornish, died at home May 2, 2018. Sid, as he was known to friends and family, was born in Philadelphia and relocated to Connecticut later on with his parents, Aaron and Dora, to operate Sidnee Furs in Torrington. Sid leaves his wife, Carole, and daughters Leslie Michelle Gornish also of East Hartford and Alanna Mrlik of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and his grandchildren, Alexis and Justin, of whom he was so proud. Sid was the co-owner and President of Carlton Supply Co., Inc. for over 40 years, and worked alongside his late father-in-law, Chairman of the Board, Charles Banks. When Carlton closed, Sid took his love and knowledge of plumbing and heating to Lowe’s in Newington where many of his loyal and longstanding customers would visit him. Sid was a Shriner and a Mason, rising quickly up the ladder of Level Lodge in West Harford before stepping down to run his business in “Charlie’s” absence. He was in the National Guard and was an Army veteran, serving his country during the Korean War. He achieved the rank of Major, was a Supply Quartermaster, commanded a battalion of men, and was a very proud patriot, often wearing a stars and stripes lapel pin. Sid was an avid square dancer, travelling far and wide with his wife to dance, loved to golf and swim, and took many family trips to national figure skating championships. In his younger days, Sid was an athlete, and competed in basketball, which he loved and at one time hoped to make a career. A graveside service and interment will be held on Sunday, May 6th at 10:00am at the Emanuel Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, Connecticut. The family will receive visitors during the Shiva memorial period from Sunday, May 6th through Monday, May 7th from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at Sid’s home, 806 Tolland Street, East Hartford, with a minyan at 5:00pm on Sunday, May 6th.
