Solomon “Solly” Dashefsky, 94 years of age, of West Hartford, died Saturday, March 30, 2019. He was the husband of the late Gertrude (Goodman) Dashefsky. Born in New York, NY., He was the son of Jacob and Ethyl (Winkler) Dashefsky. Solly had two brothers, Max and Julie, and a sister Ida. After high school, he served in the Army and was stationed at Fort Eustis in Virginia. He later accompanied his father to Hartford where he met and in 1946 married Gertrude. They were married for close to 69 years. Solly worked at Union Drug in Hartford as a wholesale associate. Afterwards he was an insurance salesman working in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Solly was employed at Roosevelt Mills in Rockville, where he managed stores throughout the state. Solly was a member of the Knights of Pythias and was active in their organization. He loved bowling and racquetball. He along with Gert followed a number of sports teams including the Yankees, Giants, and later the UConn men and women’s basketball teams. In 1990 Solly and Gert moved to Boca Raton. They enjoyed going to the beach, sitting at the pool, and socializing with their friends at Whisper Walk. Solly particularly enjoyed playing paddleball with his buddies which he did until he was 85 years old. Music was another passion for Solly. He loved jazz. He played the music of his favorites including Sarah Vaughn, Oscar Peterson, and Tito Puente. Although generally a quiet and reserved person, he loved to tell jokes (many in Yiddish) and stories to his friends and family members. They would laugh hysterically. Another pleasure that Solly took was cooking breakfast for his children, grandchildren, and nieces. French Toast, scrambled eggs, and salami and eggs were often on the menu. After Gert’s passing in 2015 he moved back to Connecticut. Solly leaves his sons, Howard Dashefsky and his wife Sabrina of West Hartford, and Jeffrey Dashefsky and his wife Mercedes of San Diego, CA: and four grandchildren, Reyna, Michael, Isaac, and Daniel. In addition he was dearly loved by his sister-in-law Beverly Kowaluk and her daughters Corey, Stacy, and Jodey. On Solly’s side of the family, he was a favorite uncle of Michael and David Grossberg and Jay Dashefsky. The Dashefsky family express their appreciation to the nurses, CNA’s and staff at the Hebrew Center where he spent his last months.
