Solomon Golanski

d. January 1, 1970

Solomon Golanski born Novogrudok, Poland, 1920, died November 27, 2017 West Hartford, CT. Beloved husband of Etta (z”l), father of Alani (Gina), grandfather of Creeley and Cy. A long-time Hartford resident, Solomon was a skilled carpenter in Europe and the US. He was a machinist at the Callaghan Paper Box Company until retirement. One of seven children, he was a Holocaust survivor and Bielski Partisan during the war. After losing his home and all his family, he was imprisoned in a labor camp where over many months he planned a successful escape. With other young people, he secretly dug a tunnel below the camp fence to the forrest. Over 100 escaped one night. In the woods, he joined the Bielski Partisans and is in a group photo that symbolizes the Jewish resistance. After the war, he lived in Rome until he was reunited with surviving relatives in Hartford. He arrived in the US in 1948, married Etta Sherman in 1952, and enjoyed a long marriage until her death in 2006. They lived in Hartford and West Hartford. He will be remembered as a heroic father, loving husband, delightful grandfather, kind friend, and man of peace. Services were at Wolkowysker Society Cemetery, November 29. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford, CT. To sign the guest book for Solomon, visit weinsteinmortuary.com/funerals/cfm.
