Steven (J.) Gladstone

Steven J. Gladstone, of Avon CT, died at home on November 12, 2019, after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. He leaves his loving wife of 32 years, Susan Lieb, son, Joshua (Kent, CT), daughter, Rachel (NY, NY), mother, Ann Gladstone (Boca Raton, FL), brother, Michael and his wife Patti Stoll (Newton, MA), niece, Samantha Johnson and nephew, Gabriel Gladstone. Steven was predeceased by his father, Arthur Gladstone. He also leaves many friends and cousins. Steven was raised in Great Neck, NY, and graduated from Great Neck North H.S. (‘77), Emory Univ. (’81) and Pepperdine Law School (’84). Steven was well known and respected in the insurance industry where he spent his entire career. He practiced insurance law at D’Amato & Lynch (NYC) before moving his family to Avon, CT in 1990. He worked at Executive Risk until 1999, when he and his associates joined XL Insurance (now AXA XL). He remained as a senior executive at AXA XL until his death. Steven and Susan enjoyed their lakefront vacation home in Northville, NY, especially when Josh and Rachel joined them there. Nothing was more important to Steven than his family. Steven always enjoyed a good joke, and he and his brother Michael would reminisce and laugh about their practical jokes and pranks from childhood. Steven had many interests including sailing, collecting classic rock CDs and the NY Yankees. Steven was warm and loving, but he could be tough and stubborn. With Susan’s unwavering support, he far outlived his life expectancy and relentlessly fought his cancer at every turn. The family thanks Dr. James Vredenburgh, who provided wonderful optimism and care during Steven’s treatment, and Joy Peck, RN, who worked alongside Dr. Vredenburgh and became a true friend to Steven and Susan during Steven’s treatment. The family also thanks Masonicare Hospice, whose nurses provided comfort to Steven and respite to Susan during his last days. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the American Brain Tumor Association (Chicago, IL). The funeral is at 1:30pm on November 14, 2019, at the Weinstein Mortuary in Hartford.
