Stuart Schwartz

SCHWARTZ Stuart Schwartz, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at UConn Health Center in Farmington, CT. Stuart was born June 29, 1934 in New York City to Jessie and Barney Schwartz. He graduated from the City College of New York with a degree in psychology and then earned a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from New York University in 1961. Stu met Florence Gilman in the Summer of 1952, they were married five years later, and remained united and devoted to each other for the next 63 years. They have resided in Newington, CT since 1969.

During his professional career, Stuart worked as a clinical psychologist and administrator, first for the Veterans Administration hospital system in Togus, Maine and as a consultant at the Kennebec Mental Health Clinic in Waterville, Maine. He then served as Chief Psychologist at Undercliff Mental Health Center in Meriden, CT and ultimately at Cedarcrest State Hospital in Newington, CT, spanning a 40-year career of service to the mentally ill and the community at large. Stuart also taught undergraduate courses in psychology and statistics for many years at the University of Hartford and then at Central Connecticut State College.

Stuart was a kind, quiet, considerate, thoughtful man who was devoted to his family and friends, and committed to living a principled, honorable life. He adored spending time with his four grand-“kids,” or his “goats” as he liked to refer to them. Whether it was introducing them to one of his favorite childhood specials on television or taking them out to dinner, he cherished every minute he spent with them. Stuart also loved to get together with his close group of childhood friends where they would discuss family, politics, and other topics of the day. Most importantly, Stuart’s enduring love for Florence will remain his legacy.

Stuart was a rigorous thinker and scholar who enjoyed understanding science and politics and had a voracious appetite for learning and discovery. Stuart enjoyed spending time with his close friends and family, reading newspapers and magazines, watching television and movies, playing tennis, and trying to predict the future of the stock market.

In addition to his beloved wife, Florence, Stuart is survived by his son David Schwartz (wife Corey), daughter Deborah Weber (husband Michael), four grandchildren (Jessica Weber, Jordan Schwartz, Joshua Schwartz, and Max Weber), and his brother Irwin Schwartz (wife Sheri).

A private, grave-side funeral will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2020.
