He graduated from Rawson, Jones Junior High, Trinity College and Wharton with an MBA. Before his career at CG/CIGNA where he worked in Group Systems, Merrill was drafted into the Marine Corps. Merrill was an active volunteer in the Hartford Jewish community. He dedicated his time to the Hartford Jewish Federation as well as to the Jewish Community Center where he served as President of the Board of Directors.
Merrill is survived by his son, Mark Stein and his wife, Jackie Gray, of Chapel Hill, NC; his daughter, Debbie Elman and her husband, Larry, of West Hartford, CT; his brother, Frederick Stein of Boynton Beach, FL; his grandchildren, Jennifer Cushman and her husband, Wesley, Julie Elman and Andrea Gray Stein; his great-grandson, Jackson; his nephew Jeff (Linda) Stein of Avon and his niece Lauren (Jimmy) Lazzaro of Georgia; as well as his great-nieces and nephews, Ariel and Jacob Stein and Samantha and Matthew Lazzaro. Merrill is also survived by his long-time friends, Lenny and Betty Hellerman, Eleanor Caplan, and Dick Levitt. Merrill was predeceased by his in-laws David & Fannie Sakofsky, his brother-in-law Harvey Sakofsky, and his sister-in-law Shirley Kolman Stein. He was also predeceased by his long-time friends Jerry Caplan and Murry Shapiro.
Merrill’s family would like to express their gratitude to his care providers from McLean Hospice, Starling Physicians and their support staff, Dr. Andy Salner, Brian Glod, and his caregiver, Tina. Also, we would like to thank the ophthalmology staff at Dr. Paul Gaudio’s office as well as Dr. Perry Rosenthal, the PROSE lens guru at Boston Foundation for Sight, for enhancing his vision and quality of live.
Funeral services will take place at 12:30 pm on Sunday, November 4, in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, 1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, CT. Immediately following the interment, the family will receive relatives and friends at 17 Stoneham Drive, West Hartford, CT. Minyan will take place on Sunday at 7 pm.
