Stanley F. Weiner, 95, of Avon, Connecticut passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 9, 2019. Stanley was the beloved husband of Esther (Jaffee) Weiner, his wife of seventy-two years. Born on April 6, 1924, he was the son of the late Abraham and Bertha (Horenstein) Weiner. Stanley lived in the Hartford community all of his life and also spent many happy winters in Boynton Beach, Florida during his retirement years. He was a graduate of Hall High School, class of 1942. He then attended Yale College (1942-1943) , the United States Coast Guard Academy and graduated from Columbia University. During World War II, Stanley served in the Army Air Corps and in the U.S. Army, Navy and Coast Guard. Stanley was a star athlete in high school and college, and later in life he was inducted into the Greater Hartford Jewish Athletes Hall of Fame. He played football at Yale, where he was the first freshman to score a varsity touchdown at the new Yale Bowl in 1942. In the same year, the Yale University Athletic Association awarded Stanley his major “Y” letter. He was also an avid golfer (who made a hole-in-one twice) and played for many years at Cliffside Country Club, where he was a founding member. Stanley closely followed his favorite sports teams including the Red Sox, Patriots, UConn and Yale. He was also an accomplished bridge player. For thirty-seven years, he was a member of the UConn Cancer Golf Committee and he also was a life-long member of Congregation Beth Israel in West Hartford. Stanley was a certified public accountant in private practice in West Hartford for many years. In 1994 the Connecticut Society of CPAs made him an honorary lifetime member for his many years of service to the profession and in 2005 it presented him with a membership award in recognition and appreciation of his continuing contributions to the profession and to the Society, after fifty years of being a member. In addition to his wife Esther, Stanley is survived by his two daughters, Jane W. Freeman and her husband Hamilton of Avon, and Judith W. Greene and her husband Bernard of Farmington. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Lindsay Kent and Abigail Greene; his sister, Selma R. Weiner; his brother-in-law and sister-in law, Rita and Jay Jaffee; and many devoted nieces and nephews. Stanley was predeceased by his two brothers, Morton Weiner and Robert Weiner. The family extends a special thank you to his many caregivers, including Lucretia Grant and Elizabeth Cummings, for their exceptional caregiving to Stanley, and to Dr. Robert Dicks and Dr. David Steffens for their many years of excellent and compassionate care.
Burial Services will be private. Funeral Services will be held in the Silberman Chapel of Congregation Beth Israel, 701 Farmington Avenue, West Hartford on October 13, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. The family will receive relatives and friends immediately after the funeral service in the Feldman Hall at Congregation Beth Israel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Stanley’s memory to Congregation Beth Israel of West Hartford or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
